GAMM Student Chapter Science Slam 2024

For the second year in a row, the GAMM student Chapter Science Slam took place on July 12th 2024. A total of 42 young researchers from the GAMM student chapter groups of Bochum, Braunschweig, Hamburg and Hannover participated in this single day event which took place at Leibniz University Hannover. These young researchers got the opportunity to present their work in a casual setting, preparing them for more formal events.

Following a joint lunch, the keynote speakers Dr. Benedikt Wegener and Dr. Alexey Fofonov from d-fine GmbH gave valuable insights into their company and possible career choices of postdocs outside of academia as well as their personal reasons for leaving academia. They highlighted, that, just as working in a research related field, consultants also have interesting and challenging questions to face on an everyday basis.

After a short break, which was used by the participants to connect to each other, we had three sessions with a total of nine speakers from all the GAMM Student Chapter groups. The topics ranged from single atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates up to whole planes and the sound they produce. They included the fields of applied mathematics, biomechanics, machine learning, material modeling and topology optimization. True to the principle of Science Slam the talks included jokes and connected the research topic to often unexpected topics from everyday life. To further connect with each other, the day closed off with a conference dinner in a local restaurant.

We would like to thank GAMM for the financial support, making this event possible. Furthermore, we would like to thank Dr. Benedikt Wegener and Dr. Alexey Fofonov from d-fine GmbH, all speakers and chairs as well as the organizers from the local GAMM Student Chapter for their contribution to the event.
