Alexander Uhlmann

Alexander Uhlmann studied mathematics at ETH Zürich, with an exchange year at Imperial College London, and completed his MSc in 2022 with a thesis on an inverse problem in Lorentzian geometry. From 2023 to 2026 he was a doctoral student of Habib Ammari at ETH Zürich. His thesis, Spectral Theory Beyond Periodicity and Hermiticity in Subwavelength Resonator Chains, develops the spectral theory of high-contrast metamaterials in settings where the classical Floquet–Bloch picture no longer applies. The methods combine boundary-integral asymptotics, Toeplitz and ergodic Jacobi operators, SL(2,R) cocycles and Lyapunov exponents. He defended in March 2026 and received his doctorate in June 2026.

Since October 2026 he has been a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Cambridge Image Analysis group at DAMTP, University of Cambridge, on the project MakingAI with the Fitzwilliam Museum and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. There he develops mathematically grounded methods for integrating multimodal, incomplete and “messy” imaging data of artworks and historical objects, with a focus on when such integrated reconstructions can be relied upon.
