11th GAMM Juniors Summer School:
Multiscale Modeling and Homogenization
Date: August 24-28, 2026
The Summer Schools on Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (SAMMs) are organized by the GAMM Juniors, i.e. the representatives of young researchers within the GAMM. All important information regarding the event and the registration can be found by clicking on the content toggles below.
Keywords: Multiscale modeling, FFT-solver, Localized Orthogonal Decomposition, two-scale convergence, Periodic unfolding, FE^2 Method
Target group
The summer school addresses young researchers from mathematics and engineering who are already working in the field of multiscale modeling and homogenization or are interested in these field. It is primarily meant for PhD students, but also Master students or PostDocs are very welcome. In the spirit of GAMM, we explicitly encourage people from both mathematics and engineering to participate.
When?
August 24-28, 2026
What?
This summer school covers mathematical and computational methods for multiscale modeling and homogenization, addressing both analytical foundations and numerical techniques with applications in solid mechanics and fluid dynamics in heterogeneous media.
The mathematical theory of homogenization is developed for periodically perforated domains, starting from asymptotic expansion of microscopic solutions and their rigorous justification via two-scale convergence. A central application is the derivation of the Darcy law from the Stokes equations in porous media, along with the associated restriction and Bogovskii operators. On the numerical side, the Heterogeneous Multiscale Method and the Localized Orthogonal Decomposition are introduced, including their error analysis and application to wave propagation problems.
The computational micromechanics part covers FFT-based methods on Cartesian grids using finite element and finite difference discretizations, geometric methods for modeling random microstructures of inclusion-based composites and aggregate materials, and Deep Material Networks – a hierarchical laminate-based deep learning approach for concurrent multiscale simulations of inelastic material behavior. Additionally, variationally consistent computational homogenization is presented as a framework for deriving scale-transition rules in coupled transient problems, with a focus on thermodynamic consistency and proper information transfer between scales.
Lectures are complemented by hands-on coding sessions, giving participants both theoretical grounding and practical experience with state-of-the-art tools for bridging micro- and macroscopic descriptions of heterogeneous materials.
